Sokvannara “Sy” Sar originally hails from Cambodia. He was a Cambodian traditional professional dancer since age 12, and began training in western ballet at age 16 at The School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet. Mr. Sar was selected to be a semi-finalist at the Varna International Ballet Competition. He began his professional career with the Pacific Northwest Ballet in 2006, and has danced with Carolina Ballet as a Soloist Dancer since 2011. While with the company, Sar has participated and appeared as a guest artist with Suzanne Farrell Ballet, St. Louis Ballet, Larry Keigwin dance troupe, Vail International Dance Festival, International Dance Salad, and many others. Some of his featured and favorite roles include Prodigal Son, Oberon, Frankenstein, Romeo & Juliet, Fancy Free, Blue Bird, Rubies, Flower Festival, Mopey, and many others. Mr. Sar is also the subject of a dance documentary film titled “Dancing Across Borders.”
Since retiring from the stage, Mr. Sar has taught ballet and contemporary at many institutions including the School of Carolina Ballet, Cary Ballet Conservatory, Cal State University, Long Beach, among many others.
